If you’ve spent the last several months cycling your way through the pandemic on a Peloton bike, it’s a good idea to take a closer look at your pedals today, as the fitness company has recalled the clip-on pedals for approximately 27,000 of its bikes. Plus, it turns out you’re supposed to change the pedals on a stationary bike regularly, so it’s something you should be aware of regardless of whether the recall affects your particular bike. Here’s what you need to know.

What is being recalled?

Yesterday, the Consumer Products Safety Commission posted an alert about a voluntary recall of around 54,000 of Peloton’s PR70P clip-on pedals, affecting roughly 27,000 bikes. These are the first-generation pedals found on Peloton bikes sold between July 2013 and May 2016, models which sold for about $2,000 (for the whole bike, not just the pedals). The bikes were sold via Peloton’s website, through phone orders, and in their showrooms across the country.

Why are the pedals being recalled?

Turns out, Peloton has received 120 consumer reports of pedal breakages, including 16 reports of leg injuries. Of the 16 leg injuries, five required medical care, including stitches for a wound on the lower leg.

How to determine if your pedals are included in the recall

According to a post on Peloton’s website, here’s what to look for to determine whether your pedals are affected:

  • The Peloton logo and the word “PELOTON” are molded into the pedal body
  • An orange Peloton symbol and white lettering spelling “PELOTON” are printed on the top of the cleat binding

If your bike has pedals with white lettering spelling “PELOTON” without the orange Peloton logo, they are not subject to this recall.

If you find that your bike does, in fact, have the recalled PR70P clip-in pedals, the company advises customers to immediately stop using their bikes until they’ve received new pedals.

What to do if your pedals have been recalled

If you purchased your bike directly from Peloton (as opposed to picking one up at the fanciest yard sale ever), you should expect to hear from the company. They are notifying all affected consumers directly with information on how to receive free replacement pedals, along with instructions for self-installation.

Otherwise, you can order a new set of pedals by submitting a New Pedal Order Form, or call Peloton (at 844-410-0141) and someone will walk you through the process over the phone.

How often should you change your pedals anyway?

Recall or not, Peloton says that their pedals should be replaced after one year (the length of the warranty). So if you purchased your bike between 2013 and 2016 and are still using your original pedals, it’s a good idea to get new ones anyway. The company recommends that owners of any stationary bike replace pedals annually—so even if you don’t have a Peloton, look into swapping yours for a new pair if you’ve been biking for more than a year.
