BEST DEALS ON MATTRESSES:

Finding the best mattresses out of all the choices you have available to you is hard. But here’s the thing: Sleep can make or break your day. If you wake up feeling energized and refreshed, concentrating and functioning will be a breeze. On the other hand, if you spend most of your nights tossing and turning, the whole day can feel like a challenge. You’ll be fatigued, irritable, and reaching for the nearest caffeine source.

Which is why it’s imperative that you find a good mattress. Not just that, but a great mattress. We won’t stop there though. You need to find the absolute best mattress for you if you have any hope of sleeping better this year.

According to the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, sleep deprivation might lead to serious health problems, including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and obesity. So it’s something to take seriously. If you need to improve your quality of sleep, it might be time for you to buy a new mattress.

You aren’t the only one who might benefit from this purchase, either. If your house guests are still subjected to the dreaded air mattress, then perhaps it’s a good time to re-evaluate your guest room offering too.

Luckily, buying a mattress is now easier than ever, especially with so many online companies selling state-of-the-art mattresses and delivering them straight to your door. Some even come with all the bells and whistles, like memory foam, cooling layers, and anti-wicking fabric, to help you rest easy and keep pain at bay. No matter what mattress type you like, you can now find it online. (Sure beats going to the mattress store, in our option.)

But you can’t just settle on any online mattress. It has to meet your needs, whether you need to decrease joint stiffness or stay sweat-free at night. It shouldn’t require much time to put together, or else you’ll most likely not use it. But if the thought of reading one more mattress review makes you want to chuck your phone against the wall, know this: That’s what we’re here for. We’ve read the reviews, compared the models, and have come up with a stellar list.

With all the options out there, it can be challenging to find the right model. Before you drop major bucks on an online mattress, there are some things you might want to consider.

What size bed should you get?

Don’t play Goldilocks when you’re looking to buy a mattress. Take measurements of your bed first, so you’re prepared to compare models. If a mattress has equivalent dimensions, you’ll know it’s the right fit. If not, skip it and consider your other options. It’s important that a mattress is available in many bed sizes. You don’t want to waste time returning or exchanging an online mattress.

Is it better to sleep on a hard or soft mattress?

Do you sleep on your back, on your side, or stomach? Knowing your sleeping style is key for buying an online mattress. Some mattresses are extra firm and designed for spine support, while others are made with softer materials for enhanced comfort. Above all else, you want to be super cozy while you catch up on your sleep.

What to look for when buying a mattress online?

Speak with your doctor first before choosing an online mattress. If you’re prone to joint pain, you’ll want to opt for a mattress that offers good body support. For overheating issues, choose a mattress with cooling technology. Concerned about your environmental impact? There are even eco-friendly mattresses to minimize your carbon footprint.

Consider the warranty:

Online mattresses don’t always come cheap, so you’ll want to consider a company’s warranty before making a commitment. Look for warranties that offer flexible coverage and support, so you won’t have to spend an arm and a leg for repairs and replacements.

Whether you are all about memory foam or temperature regulation, there are many different types of mattresses out there to meet your sleeping needs. And if you’re aiming your sights at Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Memorial Day, Labor Day, or any other kinds of holiday deals, then these are the options worth looking out for. A great night’s sleep is not that far away.

Here are our top picks for the best mattresses you can buy online:

Caters to any sleep position • Stays cool through the night • Zoned support layers minimize aches and pains
Not waterproof
No matter how you sleep, you’ll find comfort in Casper’s well-rounded Original mattress.

The Original Mattress by Casper

Comfort, durability, and versatility make The Original Mattress by Casper a great pick for all types of sleepers.

  • Sleep factor:
Sleepers of all kinds who want both support and cooling
Comfort, durability, natural cooling, and easy setup make The Original Mattress by Casper a great pick for a good night’s sleep, no matter what your sleeping position is.
Great for back, side, and stomach sleepers, this Casper mattress has three foam layers — each one adding extra full-body comfort. The top layer is soft and made with cooling, breathable Airscape material to keep the night sweats at bay, the second zoned support layer minimizes aches and pains by cradling your natural curves and supporting pressure points, and the base layer rounds out the comfort factor by reinforcing the layers above, minimizing sinking and sagging while you doze off. Its durable construction means that out of all the online memory foam mattresses out there, it’s a bit firmer than other options you’ll find — so be mindful if you want a super soft mattress that has a lot of give. If that’s you, Casper may not be the best pick.
The high-quality memory foam layers aren’t the only perk of the Casper mattress. It has a tough, removable cover made from recycled water bottles that’s built to withstand wear and tear for years to come (and a 10-year warranty if it doesn’t). Need assistance with mattress assembly? Casper offers in-home setup, where their team will hand-deliver the mattress to you, set up any products that require assembly, and remove all the packaging once they’re done so you can use your mattress right away.
If you’re not satisfied with your purchase, you can contact Casper for speedy and helpful customer service support, which many claim to be top tier in terms of customer problem-solving.
Paul, a Casper customer, writes:

“From the delivery of the box to the magical unfolding of the king size mattress to the first time laying on the bed, all smiles here! I have traveled for work for years, often sleeping on different beds at different hotels night after night. None of those beds compare to our Casper Mattress and I’ve probably tried them all. Every time I climb into bed I smile and tell my wife I love our mattress. I think you will love it too.”

Caters to any sleep style • Flippable, with seven versatile layers • Copper-infused layers for added support
Flipping may feel like a chore to some, but we can’t have it all
Layla’s unique flippable copper-infused mattress has something for every person and every sleep position, whether you prefer softness or firmness.

Layla Flippable Hybrid Mattress

Layla’s Hybrid Mattress aims to please everyone, and we have a hard time saying that it won’t — it caters to every sleep position, and every firmness/softness preference.

  • Sleep factor:
Best for sleepers who regularly switch their sleeping positions
Layla is a bit newer on the boxed mattress scene compared to the likes of Casper, Purple, and other big brands. But, they’ve reinvigorated the category in a big way with their Flippable Hybrid Mattress that hopes to provide a solution to a bevy of sleep ailments. Two unique features separate Layla’s mattress from the rest: Its flippable nature and copper infusion.
The fact that the Layla Hybrid bed can be flipped and used in different ways makes it a no-brainer for those who change up their sleep position at a moment’s notice. Craving a softer mattress one night, but a firmer one the next? Layla is both — all you have to do is flip.
Layla’s employs copper-infused layers, making for a specially designed pocketed coil system that helps achieve enhanced support no matter what side you end up sleeping on.
Here’s how Layla describes each individual layer of the mattress:

  1. Cover (Soft Side): A super-soft fabric, breathable material, integrated handles for easy flipping, and zipper for easy removal to clean.
  2. Copper-Gel Memory Foam: A 2.5-inch layer of soft and plush feeling memory foam for those who prefer the soft side, rapid cooling and body heat transfer, variable support for deep compression areas, and an antimicrobial odor control to keep you sleeping fresh.
  3. Max Airflow Support Foam: 2-inch layer of deep channels for maximum cooling and a zoned Surface Modification Technology (SMT) for customized support to conform to each individual’s body.
  4. Infinity Edge Individually Wrapped Coils System: Thick, 6-inch layer of pocketed coils for maximum motion control and a double coil perimeter for superior edge support.
  5. Another Max Airflow Support Foam Layer
  6. Another Copper-Gel Memory Foam
  7. Cover (Firm Side): A super-soft fabric, breathable material, integrated handles for easy flipping, and zipper for easy removal to clean.

Great for most sleep positions • Decreases pressure points • Compatible with most bed frames • Affordable compared to similar models
You’ll have to set it up yourself
The T&N Mattress by Tuft & Needle will help you achieve a good night’s sleep, stay comfortable in bed, and rest sans sweat for less.

T&N Mattress by Tuft & Needle

Online mattresses don’t come cheap, but the T&N Mattress by Tuft & Needle offers all the comfort and breathability perks at a fraction of the price.

  • Sleep factor:
Good for back, side, and stomach sleepers
The T&N Mattress by Tuft & Needle provides all the online mattress perks without a hefty price tag. The mattress, which is priced from $350 to $750, is more affordable compared to similar models on the market.
It offers three main benefits: pressure relief foam, a supportive base, and a cool sleeping layer. T&N’s Adaptive Foam is engineered to reduce pain and provide pressure relief without too much softness. A supportive base locks in comfort to help you stay comfortable while you rest. Overheating at night? No worries. The cool sleeping layer helps reduce sweat and boosts air circulation, so your body will stay at a proper temperature.
You’ll have to set up this mattress yourself, but it’s a very easy task. Just unbox it, let it air out and expand it for two to three hours, and you can sleep on it that night.
A 10-year limited warranty comes with the mattress, and it covers some manufacturing and workmanship defects. If you’re experiencing any mattress issues, you can contact Tuft & Needle for support.
Tuft & Needle customer Anthony says:

“The mattress is supremely comfortable. I’ve been tracking my sleep for a few years now with the app Pillow, and my sleep quality has improved by about 10 percent since I got this mattress! Amazing product and so easy to set up! Also fantastic price. There’s nothing not to love!”

Great for all types of sleepers • Comfortable • Cooling airflow • Great customer support
The base could be higher quality
The Purple Mattress is extremely comfortable and can adapt to almost any body shape — it’s built to last and the customer support team will always have your back.

The Purple Mattress

Extremely comfortable and can adapt to almost any body shape, plus the customer support team will always have your back.

  • Sleep factor:
Good for every kind of sleeper
The Purple Mattress has a pretty dedicated fan base, and for good reason — it’s extremely comfortable, and inclusive of all types of sleepers and body shapes.
Each layer of a Purple mattress works together to provide a personalized comfort experience every single night. The comfort-stretch top layer is malleable and breathable so you can feel every single bit of luxurious comfort. Right beneath it is the smart comfort grid — scientifically engineered to be flexible under pressure points like your shoulders and hips, while firm under the other parts of your body. (As Purple says themselves, “soft where you want it, firm where you need it…”). Beneath that layer are responsive support coils that further aid the comfort grid in relieving pressure and adding durability. Finally, the mesh-based plexus side panels assist with airflow moving through your bed, keeping it wonderfully cool through the long night. Simply stated, if you aren’t sure the type of mattress you should get, then this is an excellent, crowd-pleasing option.
Purple’s customer service is also top notch. Benefits like a 100-night trial, free shipping and returns, free in-home setup and old mattress removal, as well as the included 10-year warranty really make for first-class convenience and help bring you peace of mind.

New “Purple Grid” • Top layer thickness options • New responsive base layer • All the great perks of other Purple mattresses
The over-$1,000 price jump
The Hybrid Premier improves upon the original Purple mattress in almost every way, so if you can manage the price jump, you won’t be disappointed.

Purple Hybrid Premier

The most recent iteration of the Purple mattress is a major improvement over the original model — it’s pricey, but worth it if you can manage the higher price.

  • Sleep factor:
Best for every kind of sleeper, but also for couples with mixed sleeping preferences
If you’re willing and able to chuck an extra $1,100 for an upgrade to your classic Purple mattress, the newer Hybrid Premier version is well worth it.
The biggest change here is the addition of the “Purple Grid” — it’s their newest, most comfortable top layer yet, which “adapts to your body and stays cool for superior comfort, support, and overall better sleep.”
You’ll even get the benefit of being able to choose how thick you want the Purple Grid top layer to be — there’s an option for three inches (which provides optimal support for all kinds of sleepers), or four (which Purple describes as a “zero-gravity float”). Either one is great for couples who share the same bed and have different mattress-feel preferences thanks to their enhanced adaptivity.
There’s a new base layer with the Hybrid Premier, too, which is made up of responsive-support coils that improve upon the comfort factor and the overall durability of the mattress.
Along with that, you’ll get all the perks of the original Purple mattress, including free shipping and home setup, the 10-year limited warranty, and the optional 100-night no-risk trial run.
Purple claims that the Hybrid Premier is the best way to sleep, bar-none, and many of its users tend to agree — almost all the reviews you’ll find on the web are glowingly positive.

100% natural and handmade • Ethically sourced materials • Six layers • 25-year warranty
On the soft side — firm mattress lovers may not like this
Eco-friendly shoppers should shift their focus to Birch’s mattress products — they are ethically sourced, constructed, and super comfortable, too.

Birch Natural Mattress

If eco-conscious shopping is something you’re passionate about, Birch will certainly speak to your interests — all of their materials are ethically sourced, and the mattress itself is extremely comfortable.

  • Sleep factor:
Good for any sleepers who prefer softness over extreme support
The totally handmade Birch mattress is a stellar pick because of its environmentally-sound construction and its amazing warranty (25 years!), making this our pick for the best eco-friendly mattress.
The six-layer mattress is made completely from organic materials, and breaks down as follows:
Layer 1: Constructed from highly breathable soft organic cotton.
Layer 2: Made with natural wool fibers and rayon to create a fire-retardant layer that is free of plastics.
Layer 3: The comfort layer — it’s 100% all-natural, organic cotton that provides amazing comfort and temperature regulation. Retains shape and elasticity for years to come.
Layer 4: Natural responsive latex that cushions pressure points and provides contour support.
Layer 5: Individually wrapped pocketed coils made from steel give reinforced support for side, back, and stomach sleepers alike.
Layer 6: Finally, a base layer made of all-natural, organic wool batting to round out the mattress’ durability factor.
Birch describes their mattress as “farm-to-bed,” citing their ethically sourced organic cotton. (You can read more about their practices on their website.) If worrying about the environment is keeping you from getting a decent night’s sleep, then this mattress is an excellent choice.

Great body support for proper spine alignment • Made with ethically sourced materials • Meets compliance regulations for product sustainability
Not good for side sleepers unless paired with Avocado pillow top • Expensive compared to other online mattresses
Sustainability and support come together for the Avocado Green mattress, which is made with ethically-sourced materials and has ergonomic coils for spine alignment.

Avocado Green Mattress

Sustainability and support come together for the Avocado Green mattress, which is made with ethically-sourced materials and has ergonomic coils for spine alignment.

  • Sleep Factor:
Great for back and stomach sleepers
If you’re concerned about your environmental footprint, the Avocado Green Mattress ticks off all the boxes with superior support and is a stellar option if you’re comparing eco-friendly pillow-top mattresses.
To start, this eco-friendly mattress option is built to withstand wear and tear with ergonomic support coils and heavy-duty handles. The coils help with proper spinal alignment and body balance. They’re specially arranged to reduce motion transfer, so you can shift comfortably on the mattress without pain. Moving the mattress is super easy with the heavy-duty handles, because they won’t interfere with your sheets if you need to take them off and wash them.
Sustainability is a key part of Avocado’s brand, and this mattress packs in all the green features for eco-conscious customers. This mattress has ethically-sourced materials, including natural New Zealand wool and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified cotton. It’s also GREENGUARD Gold Certified by UL Environment, meaning that it meets the highest compliance standards for its minimal carbon footprint efforts.
Avocado offers setup assistance for an additional $199 fee for each mattress. Their in-home delivery team will come within a four-hour window to deliver and assemble your mattress. You can also request to have your old mattress removed with this service.
Did we mention there’s a 25-year limited warranty? If your mattress has a defect covered under the warranty, Avocado will provide you with a replacement. The warranty does not apply to normal wear and tear or damage associated with improper bed equipment. You can contact Avocado if you experience any issues with your mattress.
Sheriden B., an Avocado reviewer, writes:

“So far I LOVE my Avocado. For years I have been frustrated by the “tricks” of the mattress industry and the hidden chemicals in many mattresses. I have only had my Avocado for a week, but so far, so great. I am a mid-sized, middle-age woman and did not order the extra layer of latex. My mattress sleeps cool and I do appreciate the inner springs. The foam mattress I tried just did not cut it. Also, customer service has been amazing.”

Great support and pressure relief • Foam-free • Five times the support coils of a standard mattress • Minimal motion transfer • Made form recyclable materials
Fans of soft mattresses won’t find much to like — lacking in versatility
For back-pain-prone sleepers who need to reset at night, Parachute’s mattress provides optimal support and spine-realignment.

Parachute Mattress

If firmness and support are high on your list of mattress must-haves, Parachute takes it to new heights with quality reinforcement and pressure relief.

  • Sleep factor:
Good for side, back, and stomach sleepers
Parachute’s mattress is a great option for anyone who needs a little bit more back support and pressure relief throughout the night.
Designed to be firmer in the middle and softer at the head and feet, your back will feel reinforced while your pressure points are relieved (it’s also great for spinal alignment). No matter how you sleep, you’ll be getting ergonomic support from the Parachute mattress — it has five times the coils of a standard mattress.
In addition to its spine-friendly features, every part of the mattress is recyclable, breathable, and non-toxic (like most modern memory foam beds), plus you’ll get minimal motion transfer and thus won’t feel lots of movement in the night.
Parachute customers love the mattress — one reviewer said:

We didn’t realize how much we’d grown accustomed to our Parachute mattress until we visited family for the holidays and slept on their older beds. My husband pointed out how amazing of a night’s sleep we get with our mattress by comparison and he was right. (Mostly, it’s because we can’t feel each other roll over in the middle of the night). 9 months into owning this mattress and it was definitely the right choice!

Another reviewer praised Parachute’s supportive design:

I am too young to have back problems but I’m on my feet all day at work and this mattress provides the perfect support so I can reset every night. Definitely worth it.

So, if you find your back feeling inconsolable by the end of the day, Parachute’s mattress could be the bed to fix that.

Unrivaled cooling layers • Great customer service • Extra memory foam layers included • 10-year warranty and 90-night trial
Protective cover was bothersome for some reviewers
The Tempur-Breeze is perfect for anyone who finds themselves overheating in the middle of the night — the unrivaled cooling layers will keep you from waking to a puddle of sweat.

Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Breeze Mattress

Overheating in the middle of the night is a one-way ticket to bad sleep — the Tempur-Breeze mattress will hopefully cure you of your night sweats with its unrivaled cooling layers.

  • Sleep factor:
Good for any sleeper who overheats at night and has some back pain
Tons of people have issues when it comes to overheating at night — you aren’t alone, we swear.
If you too find yourself drenched in sweat when the sun rises, Tempur-Pedic is here to give you a much-need cool-down.
“Our breeze mattresses were designed in our thermal laboratory to help manage the micro-climate between your mattress and your covers for a cooler, deeper sleep all night long,” claims the bed brand on their website. “Research suggests a cooler sleep environment helps you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer with less tossing and turning… for better quality sleep.”
Thanks to the mattress’ three separate cooling layers, you’ll feel more comfortable as soon as you lay down — one for instant cooling, the next for retaining that coolness, and one more for extreme breathability (which allows heat that normally gets trapped under the covers to be cycled outside of the mattress). Below that is three more layers of comfortable and supportive memory foam to help round out the quality of the mattress.
This reviewer praised the mattress’ cooling system as well as the customer experience:

We sleep a third of our lives and with the Pro-Breeze breeze [sic] I just bought 30 more years. The cooling comfort and support from the mattress is literally a cool breeze that puts me on cloud 9. What a wonderful quality made product and the outstanding customer service that I have received from the support team is nothing short of excellent.

Great for most sleep positions • Three layers of foam for body support • Option for white glove delivery or self-assembly
No moisture-wicking fabric
Pain bothering your sleep routine? The Leesa Mattress is here to help with its three-layer foam construction for amazing body support.

Leesa Mattress

Say goodbye to waking up with a sore back thanks to Leesa’s three-layer construction and recovery memory foam.

  • Sleep factor:
Good for back, side, and stomach sleepers
Body support is crucial for a good night’s sleep and the Leesa Mattress can help you drift off to dreamland sans pain.
Its three-layer memory foam construction helps you stay comfortable while you sleep. A two-inch responsive memory foam layer hugs your curves and delivers the right amount of bounce for shifting positions. In the middle of the mattress, a two-inch recovery foam layer contours to your body shape and eases joint pressure. On the bottom, a six-inch core foam layer supports your body shape. You won’t have to worry about stiffness or sagging, because this construction will help you rest easy during the day or night.
White glove delivery is available for the Leesa memory foam mattress, but you can also set it up yourself. First, unbox the mattress on its side. Position the mattress on a solid or slatted foundation, remove the outer layer of plastic wrap, and tear away the inner plastic. Since it’s a memory foam mattress, it will then slowly expand in about an hour and take a few days to achieve a firm shape.
Another plus of this mattress is its 10-year limited warranty. If there’s a defect covered under the warranty, Leesa will repair or replace the mattress. It does not cover comfort preference or damage from improper equipment, though. As with any product, you can contact the manufacturer (aka Leesa) if you have any issues.
Christine S., a Leesa customer writes:

“I did a lot of research about mattresses that are supposed to be good for people with back problems and ultimately chose Leesa. The very first time I slept on my Leesa, I woke up in the morning and thought “Wait a minute…my back doesn’t hurt…am I dreaming?” I could hardly believe it. Even the pain upon getting out of bed was greatly reduced. My back problems aren’t completely gone, because no mattress will solve the underlying issues, but my back feels so much better since I began sleeping on my Leesa. It’s been about six weeks now and I truly couldn’t be more pleased with my Leesa.”

Dynamic temperature regulation • AI-powered sleep coach • Works with Amazon Echo, Google Home, Next, and Philips Hue
Sleep hacks and technology have been picking up steam in recent years and we’re willing to bet this isn’t the last smart mattress we’ll see.

The Pod by Eight Sleep

This mattress tracks and learns your sleeping habits, then adjusts the bed’s temperature for optimal comfort.

  • Sleep factor:
Good for people who get either too hot or too cold while they sleep
This new smart mattress by Eight Sleep combines dynamic temperature regulation, biometric tracking, Alexa integration, and sleep coaching. The key feature of the Pod is the aforementioned “dynamic temperature regulation,” and yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like.
The Pod tracks and learns your sleeping habits, then adjusts the bed’s temperature for optimal comfort. So when you’re getting too hot, the Pod will cool your mattress down for you and vice versa. Temperature options range from a chilly 55° all the way up to 115°F.
The Pod also includes a thermo alarm feature that begins cooling the bed slowly before its set wake-up time in an effort to ease you into your day. Of course, the Pod will also allow users to manually adjust the temperature however they see fit.
Eight Sleep’s Pod mattress provides its users with an AI-powered sleep coach that enlists biometric tracking to analyze patterns and share insights on your overall sleep health. The Pod’s smart home capabilities allow it to integrate with the rest of your smart home devices too, including Amazon Echo, Google Home, Nest, and Philips Hue.
The Pod joins Eight Sleep’s previous offering, a smart mattress that tracks your sleep habits, plus a host of other accessories in the “sleep fitness” category. Prices as follows: $1,995 for a full-size mattress,  $2,495 for a Queen, $2,795 for a King, and $2,795 for a California King.

Great for most sleep positions • Three foam layers for contouring and comfort • Compatible with most bed types • Forever warranty
You’ll have to set it up yourself
You’ll feel like you’re sleeping on a cloud with The Nectar Mattress, because it has three foam layers and a breathable cover for optimal comfort.

The Nectar Mattress

You’ll feel like you’re sleeping on a cloud with The Nectar Mattress, because it has three foam layers and a breathable cover for optimal comfort.

  • Sleep factor:
Good for back, side, and stomach sleepers
Wouldn’t it be nice to lie down on a cloud? The Nectar Mattress comes close to this dream with its advanced comfort features.
Three foam layers make all the cozy magic happen. An adaptive high-core memory foam layer supports your body sans sinking, a gel memory foam evenly distributes your weight, and a quilted gel memory foam increases breathability and air circulation.
Sweat can interfere with your sleep routine, but this online mattress keeps it at bay with its Tencel cooling cover. This fabric helps draw away heat and perspiration, so you can rest at the proper body temperature.
Setup is easy for any Nectar mattress. All you have to do is remove the packaging and plastic cover, let the mattress expand, and then you can use it on your bed. There’s minimal effort required on your part.
When it comes to warranties, Nectar is at the top of its game. It has a forever warranty (Yes, we’re not kidding!), which means that if you bought a mattress, use it, and it experiences wear and tear over time, Nectar will replace the mattress at no charge.
Paul H., a Nectar customer, writes:

“I’ve owned the Nectar Mattress for about eight months now and it’s the best purchase I’ve made for my back‚ The last few mattresses I’ve used sleep well for about 5.5 to 6 hours and then the backache would kick in and I knew it was time to get up. With Nectar, I simply don’t want to get up !! I sleep the whole night. I’ve actually changed my sleeping habits, go to bed earlier to get more rest and wake up rejuvenated. To some this all may sound cliche and I think it does to me also, but I honestly have to say that this mattress has made a difference in the way I sleep and wake each morning.”

Saatva Luxury Firm Mattress

Whether you sleep on your back, side, or stomach, Saatva’s Luxury Firm Mattress will help you rest better with its medium-firm feel and coil-to-coil system.

  • Sleep factor:
Good for back, side, and stomach sleepers
Back, side, and stomach sleepers rejoice — Saatva’s Luxury Firm Mattress is here to help you achieve a better sleep routine.
Its coil-to-coil construction offers a durable steel support base, eliminates motion transfer, and contours your body for support. You won’t need to worry about this mattress bothering your back, because its memory foam layer provides pressure relief and reduces tension. Concerned about comfort? This mattress has a medium firm feel, so it won’t feel too soft or too hard for your sleeping routine. Plus, this mattress works well with an adjustable base, which Saatva offers on their website for an additional fee.
Unlike other companies, Saatva provides mattress setup and removal. Saatva’s delivery professional will deliver the mattress to your home and assemble it in the room of your choice. This service also offers you the option of removing your old mattress and foundation. The best part? Both options are free of charge, saving you time and money in the process.
Saatva offers a 15-year warranty for its mattresses that covers specific defect situations. For the first two years, Saatva will replace your mattress for free if it says there’s a defect. From three years to 15 years, Saatva will repair your mattress, but you’ll have to pay a $99 transportation fee for shipping and returning.
Saatva reviewer Joyce S. says:

“I received your mattress almost two weeks ago. I had been “nervous” about ordering a mattress from an online store, but I did a lot of research before finally choosing a Saatva mattress. I could not believe how comfortable the bed was! For the first time in years, I could sleep on my stomach and sides without pain, numbness, and tingling! I forgot to mention that I am loaded with arthritis and within the last nine years have had to have two back surgeries, two knee replacements, and a right hip replacement. Bottom line…I sleep like a baby on this mattress and I am so happy I decided to take a “leap of faith” and trust the company and their incredible customer service and return policy.”

The Trump campaign celebrated a growth record that Democrats downplayed.

Published

on

The White House celebrated economic growth numbers for the third quarter released on Thursday, even as Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s presidential campaign sought to throw cold water on the report — the last major data release leading up to the Nov. 3 election — and warned that the economic recovery was losing steam.

The economy grew at a record pace last quarter, but the upswing was a partial bounce-back after an enormous decline and left the economy smaller than it was before the pandemic. The White House took no notice of those glum caveats.

“This record economic growth is absolute validation of President Trump’s policies, which create jobs and opportunities for Americans in every corner of the country,” Mr. Trump’s re-election campaign said in a statement, highlighting a rebound of 33.1 percent at an annualized rate. Mr. Trump heralded the data on Twitter, posting that he was “so glad” that the number had come out before Election Day.

The annualized rate that the White House emphasized extrapolates growth numbers as if the current pace held up for a year, and risks overstating big swings. Because the economy’s growth has been so volatile amid the pandemic, economists have urged focusing on quarterly numbers.

Those showed a 7.4 percent gain in the third quarter. That rebound, by far the biggest since reliable statistics began after World War II, still leaves the economy short of its pre-pandemic levels. The pace of recovery has also slowed, and now coronavirus cases are rising again across much of the United States, raising the prospect of further pullback.

“The recovery is stalling out, thanks to Trump’s refusal to have a serious plan to deal with Covid or to pass a new economic relief plan for workers, small businesses and communities,” Mr. Biden’s campaign said in a release ahead of Thursday’s report. The rebound was widely expected, and the campaign characterized it as “a partial return from a catastrophic hit.”

Economists have warned that the recovery could face serious roadblocks ahead. Temporary measures meant to shore up households and businesses — including unemployment insurance supplements and forgivable loans — have run dry. Swaths of the service sector remain shut down as the virus continues to spread, and job losses that were temporary are increasingly turning permanent.

“With coronavirus infections hitting a record high in recent days and any additional fiscal stimulus unlikely to arrive until, at the earliest, the start of next year, further progress will be much slower,” Paul Ashworth, chief United States economist at Capital Economics, wrote in a note following the report.

Black and Hispanic workers, especially women, lag in the U.S. economic recovery.

The surge in economic output in the third quarter set a record, but the recovery isn’t reaching everyone.

Economists have long warned that aggregate statistics like gross domestic product can obscure important differences beneath the surface. In the aftermath of the last recession, for example, G.D.P. returned to its previous level in early 2011, even as poverty rates remained high and the unemployment rate for Black Americans was above 15 percent.

Aggregate statistics could be even more misleading during the current crisis. The job losses in the initial months of the pandemic disproportionately struck low-wage service workers, many of them Black and Hispanic women. Service-sector jobs have been slow to return, while school closings are keeping many parents, especially mothers, from returning to work. Nearly half a million Hispanic women have left the labor force over the last three months.

“If we’re thinking that the economy is recovering completely and uniformly, that is simply not the case,” said Michelle Holder, an economist at John Jay College in New York. “This rebound is unevenly distributed along racial and gender lines.”

The G.D.P. report released Thursday doesn’t break down the data by race, sex or income. But other sources make the disparities clear. A pair of studies by researchers at the Urban Institute released this week found that Black and Hispanic adults were more likely to have lost jobs or income since March, and were twice as likely as white adults to experience food insecurity in September.

The financial impact of the pandemic hit many of the families that were least able to afford it, even as white-collar workers were largely spared, said Michael Karpman, an Urban Institute researcher and one of the studies’ authors.

“A lot of people who were already in a precarious position before the pandemic are now in worse shape, whereas people who were better off have generally been faring better financially,” he said.

Federal relief programs, such as expanded unemployment benefits, helped offset the damage for many families in the first months of the pandemic. But those programs have mostly ended, and talks to revive them have stalled in Washington. With virus cases surging in much of the country, Mr. Karpman warned, the economic toll could increase.

“There could be a lot more hardship coming up this winter if there’s not more relief from Congress, with the impact falling disproportionately on Black and Hispanic workers and their families,” he said.

Ant Challenged Beijing and Prospered. Now It Toes the Line.

As Jack Ma of Alibaba helped turn China into the world’s biggest e-commerce market over the past two decades, he was also vowing to pull off a more audacious transformation.

“If the banks don’t change, we’ll change the banks,” he said in 2008, decrying how hard it was for small businesses in China to borrow from government-run lenders.

“The financial industry needs disrupters,” he told People’s Daily, the official Communist Party newspaper, a few years later. His goal, he said, was to make banks and other state-owned enterprises “feel unwell.”

The scope of Mr. Ma’s success is becoming clearer. The vehicle for his financial-technology ambitions, an Alibaba spinoff called Ant Group, is preparing for the largest initial public offering on record. Ant is set to raise $34 billion by selling its shares to the public in Hong Kong and Shanghai, according to stock exchange documents released on Monday. After the listing, Ant would be worth around $310 billion, much more than many global banks.

The company is going public not as a scrappy upstart, but as a leviathan deeply dependent on the good will of the government Mr. Ma once relished prodding.

More than 730 million people use Ant’s Alipay app every month to pay for lunch, invest their savings and shop on credit. Yet Alipay’s size and importance have made it an inevitable target for China’s regulators, which have already brought its business to heel in certain areas.

These days, Ant talks mostly about creating partnerships with big banks, not disrupting or supplanting them. Several government-owned funds and institutions are Ant shareholders and stand to profit handsomely from the public offering.

The question now is how much higher Ant can fly without provoking the Chinese authorities into clipping its wings further.

Excitable investors see Ant as a buzzy internet innovator. The risk is that it becomes more like a heavily regulated “financial digital utility,” said Fraser Howie, the co-author of “Red Capitalism: The Fragile Financial Foundation of China’s Extraordinary Rise.”

“Utility stocks, as far as I remember, were not the ones to be seen as the most exciting,” Mr. Howie said.

Ant declined to comment, citing the quiet period demanded by regulators before its share sale.

The company has played give-and-take with Beijing for years. As smartphone payments became ubiquitous in China, Ant found itself managing huge piles of money in Alipay users’ virtual wallets. The central bank made it park those funds in special accounts where they would earn minimal interest.

After people piled into an easy-to-use investment fund inside Alipay, the government forced the fund to shed risk and lower returns. Regulators curbed a plan to use Alipay data as the basis for a credit-scoring system akin to Americans’ FICO scores.

China’s Supreme Court this summer capped interest rates for consumer loans, though it was unclear how the ceiling would apply to Ant. The central bank is preparing a new virtual currency that could compete against Alipay and another digital wallet, the messaging app WeChat, as an everyday payment tool.

Ant has learned ways of keeping the authorities on its side. Mr. Ma once boasted at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, about never taking money from the Chinese government. Today, funds associated with China’s social security system, its sovereign wealth fund, a state-owned life insurance company and the national postal carrier hold stakes in Ant. The I.P.O. is likely to increase the value of their holdings considerably.

“That’s how the state gets its payoff,” Mr. Howie said. With Ant, he said, “the line between state-owned enterprise and private enterprise is highly, highly blurred.”

China, in less than two generations, went from having a state-planned financial system to being at the global vanguard of internet finance, with trillions of dollars in transactions being made on mobile devices each year. Alipay had a lot to do with it.

Alibaba created the service in the early 2000s to hold payments for online purchases in escrow. Its broader usefulness quickly became clear in a country that mostly missed out on the credit card era. Features were added and users piled in. It became impossible for regulators and banks not to see the app as a threat.

A big test came when Ant began making an offer to Alipay users: Park your money in a section of the app called Yu’ebao, which means “leftover treasure,” and we will pay you more than the low rates fixed by the government at banks.

People could invest as much or as little as they wanted, making them feel like they were putting their pocket change to use. Yu’ebao was a hit, becoming one of the world’s largest money market funds.

The banks were terrified. One commentator for a state broadcaster called the fund a “vampire” and a “parasite.”

Still, “all the main regulators remained unanimous in saying that this was a positive thing for the Chinese financial system,” said Martin Chorzempa, a research fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington.

“If you can’t actually reform the banks,” Mr. Chorzempa said, “you can inject more competition.”

But then came worries about shadowy, unregulated corners of finance and the dangers they posed to the wider economy. Today, Chinese regulators are tightening supervision of financial holding companies, Ant included. Beijing has kept close watch on the financial instruments that small lenders create out of their consumer loans and sell to investors. Such securities help Ant fund some of its lending. But they also amplify the blowup if too many of those loans aren’t repaid.

“Those kinds of derivative products are something the government is really concerned about,” said Tian X. Hou, founder of the research firm TH Data Capital. Given Ant’s size, she said, “the government should be concerned.”

The broader worry for China is about growing levels of household debt. Beijing wants to cultivate a consumer economy, but excessive borrowing could eventually weigh on people’s spending power. The names of two of Alipay’s popular credit functions, Huabei and Jiebei, are jaunty invitations to spend and borrow.

Huang Ling, 22, started using Huabei when she was in high school. At the time, she didn’t qualify for a credit card. With Huabei’s help, she bought a drone, a scooter, a laptop and more.

The credit line made her feel rich. It also made her realize that if she actually wanted to be rich, she had to get busy.

“Living beyond my means forced me to work harder,” Ms. Huang said.

First, she opened a clothing shop in her hometown, Nanchang, in southeastern China. Then she started an advertising company in the inland metropolis of Chongqing. When the business needed cash, she borrowed from Jiebei.

Online shopping became a way to soothe daily anxieties, and Ms. Huang sometimes racked up thousands of dollars in Huabei bills, which only made her even more anxious. When the pandemic slammed her business, she started falling behind on her payments. That cast her into a deep depression.

Finally, early this month, with her parents’ help, she paid off her debts and closed her Huabei and Jiebei accounts. She felt “elated,” she said.

China’s recent troubles with freewheeling online loan platforms have put the government under pressure to protect ordinary borrowers.

Ant is helped by the fact that its business lines up with many of the Chinese leadership’s priorities: encouraging entrepreneurship and financial inclusion, and expanding the middle class. This year, the company helped the eastern city of Hangzhou, where it is based, set up an early version of the government’s app-based system for dictating coronavirus quarantines.

Such coziness is bound to raise hackles overseas. In Washington, Chinese tech companies that are seen as close to the government are radioactive.

In January 2017, Eric Jing, then Ant’s chief executive, said the company aimed to be serving two billion users worldwide within a decade. Shortly after, Ant announced that it was acquiring the money transfer company MoneyGram to increase its U.S. footprint. By the following January, the deal was dead, thwarted by data security concerns.

More recently, top officials in the Trump administration have discussed whether to place Ant Group on the so-called entity list, which prohibits foreign companies from purchasing American products. Officials from the State Department have suggested that an interagency committee, which also includes officials from the departments of defense, commerce and energy, review Ant for the potential entity listing, according to three people familiar with the matter.

Ant does not talk much anymore about expanding in the United States.
