Your favorite fall meteor shower is back! The Orionids peak tonight, although they should be visible anytime between now and November 7, 2020.

They’re called the Orionids because the meteors will appear to come from the general location of the constellation Orion. (Fun fact: they’re made of debris from Halley’s comet.) Even if you’re not much of a stargazer, this shower is easy to spot. Look for three stars in a row; that’s the “belt” that Orion the hunter wears.

Early morning will be the best time to watch the show, provided the weather holds out—the hours just before dawn are the time you’re most likely to see meteors.

California, the southwestern U.S., and parts of the southeast will likely get the best views, since clouds are in the forecast for the east coast. But if you can see Orion at all, it’s worth looking up to see if meteors appear. This shower often produces 20 to 25 meteors per hour at its peak. The Orionids usually streak through the sky very quickly, EarthSky reports, but they tend to leave a trail that’s visible for a few seconds afterward.

If you don’t see much tonight, try again tomorrow. The Orionids will be at least somewhat visible through the first week of November, weather permitting. Find a spot with little light pollution, and look up.

This post was first published in October 2019, and was updated October 20, 2020 with the dates and weather forecast for this year’s shower.

Apple will replace AirPods Pro for free with faulty noise cancellation, static or crackling

Published

on

Today, exactly one year after Apple first launched the AirPods Pro — and thus the same day the very first AirPods Pro owners will see their one-year warranties expire — Apple has launched a repair program that offers free repairs or replacements for another whole year if your AirPods Pro experience issues with noise cancellation or static.

Specifically, Apple will fix:

Crackling or static sounds that increase in loud environments, with exercise or while talking on the phone

Active Noise Cancellation not working as expected, such as a loss of bass sound, or an increase in background sounds, such as street or airplane noise

Apple says only a “small percentage of AirPods Pro” are affected by the issues, but it apparently wasn’t just an early batch — Apple says affected units were manufactured “before October 2020,” meaning every AirPods Pro ever made might be eligible. That’s quite a recall if so. Apple says it will repair faulty AirPods Pro for two years after you first buy them.

We’ve heard complaints about degraded noise cancellation before, and at least one Verge editor has replaced their AirPods Pro under warranty. It’s nice to hear that Apple isn’t just cutting buyers off as soon as that warranty expires.
